ISTANBUL, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- A deadly shooting attack on a police station in Türkiye's western port city of Izmir left two officers dead and three others injured on Monday morning.
The assailant, a 16-year-old identified by his initials E.B., opened fire with a pump-action shotgun at the Salih Isgoren Police Station in the Balcova district at around 8:50 a.m. local time (05:50 GMT).
According to the Izmir governor's office, two police officers were killed, while two others and a civilian were wounded. One of the injured officers is in critical condition.
Local media NTV aired a video showing the masked attacker opening fire on the police station from outside the building, fatally shooting an officer stationed at the entrance booth.
As the attacker moved away from the station along the street, a counterterrorism officer pursued him and fired warning shots but was struck and killed by the attacker's gunfire, according to the NTV. The attacker was apprehended after sustaining four gunshot wounds.
Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban said the attacker is receiving treatment at Alsancak State Hospital.
Following the attack, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Istanbul that "we received heartbreaking news that has deeply shaken us all," adding that the gunman's connections are under investigation.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, meanwhile, stated on the social media platform X that an investigation into the incident has been launched under the lead of eight prosecutors. ■
